Contest prep
Your First Bodybuilding Show: What to Expect and How to Prep
A first show involves preparation, posing practice, registration and a show-day plan. Coach Toni Abdo works with first-time competitors in Mesa and online across the US. Start with a conversation about your division, experience and routine, then discuss the steps involved rather than assuming a standard timeline will fit.

Where should I start?
Tell Toni why you want to compete and what your training looks like now.
Discuss a division and federation before choosing a show. Read the federation’s current rules so the registration process, eligibility and judging expectations are clear.
What should I plan beyond training?
- A prep timeline discussed with Toni
- Regular posing practice
- Federation registration and check-in requirements
- Show-day arrangements and support
- A conversation about what comes after the show
The process
How does coaching
with Toni work?
A plan is the start. The check-ins keep it real. Training, nutrition and mindset belong in the same conversation. Here is how coaching with Toni works.
Start with a conversation
Talk about your goals, your daily routine and why this matters to you. A free 20-minute consult helps you and Toni decide whether coaching is a fit.
Put your starting point on the table
Complete an assessment in the Team Elite Coaching app so your training, nutrition and habits can be considered together.
Make the plan clear
A 45-minute kickoff call gives you time to understand your plan and ask questions before getting into your routine.
Check in, every day
Use the app to stay in touch with Toni. Bring the good days and the difficult ones. The point is an honest picture, not a perfect score.
Review and adjust each week
Your weekly check-in and Zoom call give Toni the context to adjust training and nutrition as you go.
What would you
like to know?
Start here, then bring your own questions to Toni.
How far out should I start prep?
Toni sets the timeline during your consult after talking through your starting point, division, training experience and show plans. There is no one-size-fits-all weeks-out promise here. An early conversation gives you room to discuss preparation, posing practice and what you can realistically commit to.
Do you coach natural athletes?
Yes. Team Elite Coaching supports athletes in natural federations including OCB, WNBF and INBA/PNBA, as well as NPC and IFBB Pro League divisions. Check the current rules directly with your federation. Coaching does not determine eligibility, award a placing or promise a pro card.
Can I prep for my first show with Toni?
Yes. First-time and returning competitors can discuss prep with Toni. Start by talking about your goals, division and experience. Coaching covers the preparation process, including posing and the stages around show day. Your timeline and support needs are discussed individually rather than assumed from a template.
